How to prepare for class:
- READ THE THREE PIECES in our course Dropbox folder for 9/26/2012. With these readings we move into focusing on digitality and digital communication technologies – but we are reading across a range of approaches to such technologies. Given that the readings for week 4 range across mobile technologies, social media, and the effects of networks, this might seem a little disconnected to you—and yet this apparent “disconnect” is exactly what I want us to be discussing, because there are connections and we have to build them… which is why at the end of the 9/19 class I brought up the notion of ecology as a potential model to use for thinking about relations among these technologies and writing. The readings for 9/26 are:
- chapters 1,3,4, and 5 from Nancy Baym’s 2010 book, Personal Connections in the Digital Age.
- the introduction and first chapter from Jason Farman’s 2012 book, Mobile Interface Theory: Embodied Space and Locative Media.
- the introduction and chapters 4-5 from Howard Rheingold’s 2012 book, Net Smart: How to Thrive Online.
- On the wiki, I want to see a page on each reading, composed through the efforts of all of you. That is, I expect to see each of your names in the page history for each reading.
- Finally, please post on your blog a chart showing the objects/cultural practices/institutions to which you believe “writing” articulates; explain the articulations by annotating them. With the chart put any writing that will help others understand your chart.
All the blog and wiki posts are due no later than 5pm on September 25; this gives us all time to read each other’s thoughts and to prepare.
Thanks!
